Frequently Asked Questions

Is BiomeBank FMT approved for use in Australia?

Yes, BiomeBank’s donor-derived FMT (faecal microbiota transplantation) product, Biomictra, is approved by the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration).

Who can I treat with FMT in Australia?

In Australia, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has approved faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) primarily for the treatment of recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI). This approval is based on substantial clinical evidence demonstrating FMT’s efficacy in resolving recurrent CDI cases.

While there is emerging research into FMT’s potential applications for other conditions, such as ulcerative colitis and various gastrointestinal disorders, these uses are not currently approved by the TGA. Consequently, FMT for indications beyond recurrent CDI should only be conducted within approved clinical trials or under the TGA’s Special Access Scheme, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

Can I order FMT and have it delivered to a Private Hospital?

Yes, BiomeBank can supply FMT products (Biomictra) to private hospitals in Australia. Delivery is available, and we can coordinate logistics to ensure compliance with hospital and product requirements. Delivery of Biomictra can be tailored to clinical requirements to arrive the day prior to or the day of a planned FMT procedure.

To proceed with an order, please follow the instruction below OR to discuss specific needs, please contact kwillacy@biomebank.com or call 0424949007 for assistance.

What time will FMT arrive at the Private Hospital?

FMT from BiomeBank usually arrives at 9 am on the day of the procedure, although the timing can be adjusted depending on the FMT procedure or hospital requirements.

How long is the thaw time of FMT?

Biomictra will thaw after 4 hours at room temperature.

How will the FMT arrive at the hospital?

FMT will arrive in a sealed box, within which is a sealed envelope in dry ice. Further information about storing the product can be found in our Product Information at www.biomebank.com

What time should I schedule an FMT procedure on my list?

If Biomictra is delivered on the day of procedure, it is best to schedule the FMT procedure to allow for a 4-hour thaw time

How easy is the procedure?

Any gastroenterologist with experience in colonoscopy should be competent in delivering FMT to a patient. The FMT is delivered directly from the pre-packaged syringe to the backchannel of the colonoscope or endoscope. For detailed guidance, please refer to our Product Information, which provides a step-by-step guide on the procedure.

Additionally, you may find the following video from our founder, A/Prof. Sam Costello, helpful for a hands-on demonstration: https://www.biomebank.com/resources-a-guide-to-fmt/

How much will the FMT cost?

The cost of FMT varies based on your location in Australia, dosage, clinical indication, and delivery requirements.

For specific pricing details, please feel free to call us at 0424 949 007, and we’d be happy to assist.

What side effects might a patient experience?

FMT (Faecal Microbiota Transplant) is generally well tolerated, but like any medical procedure, it carries potential side effects. These can vary depending on the patient’s health status and the method of administration.

Please refer to the Product Information sheet.

Are there any special dietary instructions post-procedure?

There are no strict dietary restrictions following FMT, but patients are generally advised to maintain a balanced, fibre-rich diet to support gut microbiome health. Some clinicians may recommend avoiding excessive processed foods, alcohol, or antibiotics (unless medically necessary) in the weeks following the procedure to help the transplanted microbiota establish successfully.
